The thin crust builds up to form a small closed dome and then, under the pressure of the vapors beneath it it is blown open in a cyclic recurrent process. The potash inside the mound has a temperature of about 400° centigrade. Potash (potassium carbonate) melting point is at 891° centigrade. The mound is now (1971) again open.
