Freedom
and power are two conditions which we meet with in this world,
however they are restricted by the environment and the society into
which we live. Even a mythical king of the world could not enjoy
complete freedom and power. As for immortality, it cannot exist in a
perishable universe, it is none but a concept of the mind which
shields us from the fear of death and of the unknown, a shield which
helps us to have a purpose in life and to maintain our sanity ---
whatever sanity within the set of standards of diverse societies may
be. Complete freedom and power belong to the mental realm and there
they may be achieved. Immortality is a concept which, as stated,
cannot belong to a physical universe hence it cannot be described
but this does not rule out its existence so long as we go a step
further and give up the notion of immortality as something
"individual". You as "you" - that which you are here and
now - will never know eternal life. No one will ever meet with
eternal damnation in hell or eternal beatitude in heaven, nor will
you - hell and heaven being nothing but states of mind within
ourselves, right here and now, no matter what the priest, bikshu or
nullah will tell you.
Little
needs to be added to Nasruddin's story. Freedom, power and
immortality are man's unending quest and in this world of savants,
sycophants, pundits and gurus the roads pointing to them are
innumerable - yet just a few make sense. History's value is indeed
recognized as extremely useful, knowledge is nothing definitive but
an evolutionary process and this clearly points to the fact that
within the bulk of knowledge accumulated through the centuries -
amidst innumerable fantasies and a lot of nonsense - we find the
seeds of the tree which may satisfy our quest. But this tree must be
watered with uncontaminated water, we must create anew the rich soil
wherewith to thread our path.
Freedom, power and immortality are not a myth insofar as they
are intended as tangible spiritual values. The attainment,
paradoxically, is through loss of freedom or, in other words,
becoming slaves to our true self. The means are to be found in the
great literary works of the past but they must be stripped of the
irrational and be refined with the help of our current scientific
knowledge and that is the indispensable prerequisite.
In this
section you will not find astral creatures, reincarnation, the
kundalini or the coiled serpent which is to be seen in the picture
of Asclepius above, nor chakras, sacred circles and all sorts of
helpful esoteric symbolism or nonsense which is so attractive to the
inquiring mind but down-to-earth writings which are useful to gap
the bridge between the self and the mind or, rather, which help to
reveal the mind to conscious awareness for what it is: the self-less
self.
The
emphasis will be on works related to an understanding of the
psyche - because that is the pivotal point - from a contemporaneous
point of view: the forces which act on our mind, either spontaneously
or induced and works which came down to us from the historical
past of the quest for truth. Symbolism and archetypes cannot
be underestimated hence some anthropological works revealing
the building bricks of the human quest for the supernatural
are included. Religion, with reference to the contemporary
systems, as we see it now in a miserable state and doomed
unless the diverse systems won't fuse into a unique body of
truth, will obviously creep in but not for the sake of religious
aims but because its psychological contents has been and still
is, however badly manipulated, the foundation stone of a long
historical process. Reports concerning mind-conditioning techniques
give a good insight to the way our brains can be forced to
act counter-itself hence they become valuable in
the contest and some are included. And much more material
is to be found in this site's other section, World's
Literature. All
in all here is not a course in mind-developing techniques
but a vast panorama from which the techniques can be extracted
choosing the best and most rational hints which may fit your
personality.
The
greater constraint is the society into which we live with its
requirements which are little if any favorable to such a quest: we
must toil and run for a living; the search for security and
commodities; ambitions, the immersion in the information age and its
complex technology which invades our life leave small room to the
genuine within ourselves so that favorable conditions practically do
not exist. While we cannot resort anymore to hermitage and
asceticism it is just an act of will to find - or create - the
favorable conditions to pursue this quest: a quiet corner and a
little time are not so difficult to obtain.
Freedom
power and immortality are not myths, the myths are what usually they
are thought to be. It is up to each of us to discover them for what
they are and there is the end of the quest ... as well as its
beginning. The further you go the longer and wider the path becomes,
it flows in endless eternity. And that is where our true self
thrives ...
Where
mind and Mind fuse there is not an origin nor an
end. Where mind and Mind fuse there is no
constriction. Where mind and Mind fuse there is
power.
