KEEP NETWORK COMPONENTS IN CHECK

It's good practice to keep the number of network components loaded on a Windows workstation to a minimum. Doing so allows system resources to remain available and network access to remain efficient.

On a networked Windows 9x system, open Control Panel and then the Network applet. On the Configuration tab, make a note of the installed adapters, protocols, and services. Justify each one by determining if they're really needed in order to access the files and printers on your network. Also, check to see whether any dial-up adapters are required for modems still used on the PC.

If, after careful investigation, you find that you have unneeded components installed, you can highlight them on the menu and click Remove. It's a good idea to first check their properties and note the settings for these components before removing them, in case you need to add them again at a later date.
