TROUBLESHOOTING THE WINDOWS 98 BOOT PROCESS WITH BOOTLOG.TXT

Troubleshooting Windows 98 boot up problems can be time-consuming at best, and in previous TechMails, we have discussed tools such as the Microsoft Configuration utility (msconfig), which can help clean boot our systems.

However, if you just want to have an idea of which individual Windows files are failing at startup, you could try logging the startup process. As Windows starts, press the F8 key to bring up the Start Up menu and select the Logged option. This creates a file named Bootlog.txt in the root of the drive where Windows is installed. You will see a list of each file that is loaded together with an indicator of whether the file was loaded successfully.

For example, if you saw

LoadFailed = ndis.vxd

in the log file, you would know that Ndis.vxd had not started. Thus, you would want to make this file the target of your searches into the Microsoft Knowledge Base, or (in this case) look at the networking components of Windows to see if the problem lies there.
