TAPE DRIVE CONTROLLERS NOT LISTED IN ADD NEW HARDWARE WIZARD

If you are upgrading your Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE computer with a tape drive, you may be frustrated to find that Tape Drive Controllers are not listed when the Add New Hardware Wizard runs.

All you need to do to work around this is to install Microsoft Backup. Once MS Backup is installed, the Add New Hardware Wizard should list Tape Drive Controllers as an available device.

To install the Microsoft Backup Utility:

Click Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add\Remove Programs.

2. Click on Windows Setup tab.

3. Click the System Tools option and then click Details.

4. Click Backup and then click OK twice.

5. Follow the instructions provided to install the required files.

If you still have problems installing, it's likely because you're running an unsupported device. Windows 98 MS Backup will accept any of the following backup devices:

* 8mm

* 3010 and 3010 Wide

* 3020 and 3020 Wide

* DAT (DDS1 and 2)

* DC 6000

* DLT

* QIC 80 and 80 Wide

* TR1, 2, 3, and 4 (Travan)

Removable media (floppy disks, Iomega Jaz or SYQT cartridges).

Additionally, you should note that Windows 98 MS Backup is backwards-compatible only with Windows 95 Backup and will not accept tape archives made with MS-DOS Backup utilities.
