WHEN SCANDISK WON'T CHECK YOUR
      DRIVES

This TechMail could just as well be named "Make sure you know
which version of Windows you created your Startup Disk with," but that's a
real mouthful. If you try to run ScanDisk from either a startup floppy or
from a disk onto which you've copied files from another computer that was
created from a different version of Windows than the one you're working
on, you may find that ScanDisk does not work. Different versions of
Windows have their own versions of ScanDisk and its accompanying
      file.

Specifically, you may receive one of the following
      messages:

ScanDisk cannot examine drive <drive
      letter>:

This version of Microsoft ScanDisk will work only with MS-DOS
      versions 5.0 and later.

ScanDisk cannot check this drive now because the disk is not
properly formatted, or a program such as a disk utility has locked it.
Format the disk or wait for the utility to finish, and then restart
      ScanDisk.

For example, this may occur if your version of ScanDisk came
from the original version of Windows 95 and you are trying to work on a
Windows 95 OSR2 or Windows 98 computer or if you are working on a Windows
95 computer and the version of ScanDisk you are using was copied from a
      Windows 98 computer.

Using Extract.exe, find and extract the following files that
are relevant to the version of Windows on which you are working. Then try
      running ScanDisk again.

      Scandskw.exe

      Dskmaint.dll
